"11. El Melon" stencil painting

"11. El Melon" - Spraypaint on concrete panel, wood panel, rebar wire, and aluminum, 18"x24"

Growing up in Southern New Mexico, I was introduced early on to the vibrancy of Mexican culture. The images that always resonated the most with me came from the Loteria deck. Loteria is a game similar to bingo played mostly in Mexico, but has old roots in Europe. It has a 54 card deck, each of which showing a tarot-like image. There was always something extremely lively, passionate, and ultimately melancholy about these images, so I decided to reinterpret some of them, cut out stencils, and spraypaint them.
