Hollywood Fringe Festival 2010 Guide Cover

When it came time to design the cover for the guide of the first Fringe festival, I experimented with lots of different ideas, including mixing stencils and spray paint with photographs, but it all seemed kind of flat to me. I wanted a really colorful image with lots of depth and visual interest. I came up with an idea for what is basically a photographed diorama -- the freaks are made out of clay in front of a paper Hollywood skyline and hills, with a flock of over 100 hand-cut birds flying in the sky above spelling out "2010" with the negative space. The birds were attached to 30 lengths of fishing line, each weighted with washers to keep them taut. The whole setup was built using a folding laundry rack.
